Mendum, Jane
Jane Mendum for MayorI moved to Highlands almost 30 years ago, and soon became involved in the community. When Highlands first incorporated, I served on several municipal advisory committees, and was first elected as councillor 9 years ago.
Highlands is very special and unique, a place most worthy of planning for success - in retaining diversity, in remaining unique, in leading true sustainability as a small municipality. All is possible with a good process that is consultative, objective, and takes Highlands values into account.
One of the important issues in this election is groundwater; a safe water supply for all Highlanders is a priority for me, as the record clearly shows. The next phases of Highlands’ groundwater study will see the collection of data that will guide decisions to inform residents and council how to best protect the quality and quantity of our groundwater. I will hold developers to their promises in order to protect this essential natural resource.
Another important issue is leadership. Highlands deserves an effective mayor who will meet the needs of land-owners and developers while upholding the interests and values of ALL Highlanders. As a consensus-builder, who holds deep respect for all points of view, I would work to identify areas of agreement, and bring divergent views together. Each council member deserves equitable support from their mayor, and I pledge to deliver that!
Bridging divide is important to me, and it is important to the success of the Highlands’ community. Seeking common ground through consultation and inviting open dialogue, respecting concerns and working through issues in a tolerant, fair, and transparent manner is the way forward for the next Highlands council and the community it serves.
I have worked hard to maintain community values over the past three terms as your council representative. With your support on November 15th, as a consensus-builder committed to respect and fairness, I will provide effective leadership, putting community interests first and returning peace to the Highlands.
