Ranns, John

John Ranns for Mayor

It is commonly thought that broadening a municipality’s tax base is the best approach to ensure sustainability.  Metchosin has proven that, for a rural community, a better approach is to tightly control expenditures and strictly avoid urban servicing demands.  In doing this Metchosin is able to provide a unique lifestyle, a broad range of home business opportunities and low cost, less intrusive governance.

As Mayor I have been a strong advocate for fiscal restraint, working proactively to recession proof the community against the anticipated economic downturn.  We have initiated a new approach to administration which relies on highly qualified consultants, instead of senior staff, to provide service when needed.  This has resulted in lower taxes, a 25% increase to reserves and substantial increases to infrastructure funding.

With no debt, over $5 million in reserve, and significantly reduced fixed costs, Metchosin is now well situated to sustain its long term rural identity regardless of economic conditions.

In my 22 years of elected office I have established a record of strong leadership and a proven willingness to stand up for what is important to our community.  I welcome your questions and comments at 250-478-3446, jranns@ shaw.ca or visit my website at www.members.shaw.ca/jranns
