BBB Announces Annual Community Shredding Event

BBB Community Shredding Event May 26

Victoria, BC – BBB* serving Vancouver Island announces the date for their annual spring Community Shredding Event.

Join BBB and Access Records on Friday, May 26, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the parking lot at Tillicum Centre (outside Old Navy) for shredding by donation. Access Records will have their mobile shredding truck available for secure onsite shredding.

Once again BBB is partnering with the local non-profit organization HeroWork to raise funds to support their Radical Renovation projects. All consumers and small businesses are invited to bring up to 5 bags or 5 boxes of confidential documents for shredding, by donation. BBB will also be onsite selling hotdogs. All proceeds raised will be given directly to HeroWork.

“Contrary to popular belief, the overwhelming majority of identity theft occurs when a thief has direct contact with the victim’s personal information,” says Rosalind Scott, President & CEO of BBB serving Vancouver Island. “Online hackers and phishing scams dominate media headlines, but nearly 90 percent of all identity fraud happens because of stolen bank statements; lost or stolen wallets, checkbooks or credit cards; and other off-line means. Getting into the habit of regularly and securely shredding confidential documents if vital to protecting yourself from identity theft.”

Not sure what to shred and what to keep? Here’s a quick run-down:

  • Keep for one year (unless needed for tax purposes): receipts, debit/ATM receipts, monthly bills, medical receipts and information, travel itineraries and information, etc.
  • Keep for three years: bank or credit card statements, expired insurance policies, employment applications, etc.;
  • Keep for seven years: invoices, tax returns and associated documents, cancelled stock certificates, payroll records, withholding statements, etc.;
  • Keep permanently: deeds, mortgage information, receipts or warranties for major purchase for your home, audit reports, insurance records, legal correspondence, property records, etc.
